I need to stop my PCP...

I have a car on a PCP contract. I am 12 months into the contract. I am moving abroad and what to know whats options I have regarding this? Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Joan,

You'll have to check the small print of your contract, and speak to someone at the dealership you bought the car or the finance arm that supplied the PCP. Unfortunately, in most cases, after only a year in the contract you are likely to be liable for a large sum of money if you end the contract early. They usually go by a '50 per cent' rule, where you can give the car back without an issue if you've already paid over 50 per cent of the amount financed. If not, then you'll have to make up the difference. If you don't pay, and you give the car back, you still legally owe that money to the finance institution.

If your finances allow, and you have time before you move abroad, another option is to ask the finance company for the full settlement figure, pay that off and then the car is yours to sell. If it has kept its value, that might work out well, but is a risk and requires time and capital.

As I said, the best thing you can do is talk to the lender and dealer to begin with.
