I need an economical automatic car

I currently drive a Kia cee'd automatic and need to replace it with an equally sized car, butautomatic and fuel efficient. Any suggestions?

Our answer:

Hi George,

I would suggest simply renewing your cee’d with a new one – they’re a bracingly good car, reliable, good to drive and with that long warranty. Of course, you already know all that if you’ve owned one and the wrinkle here is that the automatic version of the cee’d is actually quite expensive – a nudge over €27k. Sadly, that’s the case for pretty much any similarly sized car whether it’s the predictable duo of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf (€27k for the Focus TDCi diesel auto, €25k for the 1.2 TSI petrol DSG automatic Golf) or even the cee’d’s cousin, the Hyundai i30, which you’ll need to find €26k to get with an automatic.

There is a good, reliable, economical option though and it’s the Skoda Rapid. Now, it’s not as sophisticated to drive as the cars mentioned above (although Skoda has dramatically improved it in the past year), but you can get it with the 1.6 TDI diesel and DSG automatic gearbox for €23,535. The official fuel economy figure is 63mpg so you should have no trouble keeping it above 50mpg.
