You could try something like a 2001 Toyota Yaris (or Vitz, if you find an import). There were a few automatic examples of it made back then, it should be well within the budget and you can fold the back seats down to get the dog in the back. Better still, as a relatively simple and basic Toyota, it should prove to be reliable, too.
