I’m looking for a 7 seater as I have 4 kids. I need automatic transmission. I do very little mileage as I walk to work and schools. I might only do 5 miles a week sometimes. I’ve been told that this is bad for Diesel engines. Any advice?
Hi Jenny,
This is definitely the sort of mileage and usage that will clog up the Diesel Particulate Filter on a modern turbodiesel, which is a costly fix, so whoever advised you about that was absolutely right. For your usage, you would be the ideal person to get the best from a plug-in hybrid – if you charged it regularly, you’d never need to use its onboard fuel reserves. They’re expensive, but have a look at the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin-Engine PHEV, built from 2015 onwards. It’s a beautiful vehicle with seven seats and it’ll go up to 40km on electric power alone. The T8 comes only with an automatic transmission, too.
