I feel like my Golf is using too much fuel...

I feel like my 2013 Mk7 2.0TDI golf is going through a lot more fuel than it should. I covered a short 7 mile trip and 15miles fell of the range and it has been doing this consistently since i bought it two weeks ago. Any ideas?

Our answer:

Hello Niall,

Don’t panic – this is perfectly normal. All cars’ trip computers use an algorithm to work out your potential range and it’s based on how the car is being driven at any given moment in time. Now, from what you’re telling us, you’re obviously doing lots of short journeys, which we are guessing are stop-start and probably conducted in urban environments. This is not the best sort of driving for fuel economy; so your Golf will indeed be using more fuel and its range will be coming down. Furthermore, cars are less fuel-efficient when they’re running from cold start-up, so the Golf probably isn’t getting up to its best operating temperature travelling short distances. Take your car out onto a motorway or for a long run, where your speeds are constant and you remain in one gear, and you’ll soon find that the trip computer actually starts to increase your potential range, rather than reduce it – you can sometimes travel 100km or more, and if it has been a smooth journey and there’s plenty of fuel still in the tank, then you’ll have more range showing at the end of your trip than you had at the start. Therefore, we don't thinkg there's anything wrong with your Golf.
