That's not a simple question to answer. Electric power is the cleanest on a local level as there are no exhaust emissions at all and, assuming you can charge up at home, it also comes with the lowest running costs. 

However, electric cars are often more expensive to buy.

Additionally, to own an electric car, you really do need a home charger. Unless of course you cover very short mileages each year. The public charging network just isn't good enough yet to be relying on it all of the time.

Regardless of how big the battery and how long the range between charges of an electric car, it is limited a little by its range and how long it takes to charge up. A hybrid doesn't have that issue so it offers more flexibility. 

In terms of driving, an electric car is quieter and smoother for the most part, too.
