How valuable is a three-month warranty?

Hi, I am looking to buy a used Volkswagen Touareg SUV - how valuable is a three-month dealer warranty? Should I focus more on NCT/DOE cert and service history from a private seller? Would you recommend an AA evaluation of vehicles in both circumstances?

Our answer:

Hi Omar,

If you're spending a significant amount of money on a car then an AA inspection is always a good idea - it's a few hundred Euro but it can save you thousands in the long run.

As for warranties, I'm surprised that you're only being offered three months - most dealer/manufacturer used programmes usually offer a year nowadays.

Service history is usually the best rule of thumb to judge a vehicle by though. If all the stamps are present and correct, chances are you're looking at something good. On a car like a Touareg, a full service history is absolutely vital.
