Hi, My husband and I have moved form the uk 2 months ago after living there for a year, we took our cars with our belongings on the ferry. I would like to sell one of the cars but I'll need to register them both, how do I go about doing this and what paperwork do I need?
Hi Chloe,
Technically speaking you were supposed to notify Revenue within seven days of arrival and re-register the cars here within 30, so don't delay now as the cars could actually be seized.
Assuming you each have a car in your name, and you are eligible for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, you'll both have to do all of these steps:
1 - Apply for ToR relief. The best advice we can give is to go through the process described in Revenue's own Moving to live in Ireland from outside the EU page. Once that's done you'll have a reference number or ToR approval letter from Revenue. This will mean no customs duty or VAT are payable.
2 - Book an appointment at NCTS.ie to have the car inspected, though if you are eligible for ToR then there won't be any VRT due in any case. It still needs to be done as part of the process and you'll be given an Irish registration number to go get plates made up.
3 - Tax the car on Motor Tax Online and the Irish registration certificate will come in the post.
Make sure you have the following:
- Original V5C 'logbook' for the car
- Proof of Irish address
- Photo ID
Best of luck
