First thing to do is make sure your engine is in top shape, so change the plugs, give it fresh oil, change the fuel filter, etc. The air filter makes a huge difference to response so either replace it with a new one or consider getting a free-flowing item instead. 

After that, you could consider getting the engine remapped by a professional company and replace the exhaust with a performance-oriented one.
