The tyres will be visually inspected for any damage for a start. The same tyre sizes and types must be on a given axle, too. The tyres must have the correct load and speed rating for the car and they must have an "e-mark" for type approval. If they are over six years old you'll be given an 'Advisory Pass'. Finally, do check that the pressures are correct all-round. This won't be checked by the testers, but it can affect things like headlight alignment.
