How reliable is the Volvo 1.6 diesel?

Hi. How reliable is the 1.6Diesel engine made by Volvo? Is it something that one can consider when buying a car that should last long term?

Our answer:

Hi Levi,

It’s generally a very good engine. It’s shared across a number of brands, including Volvo, Ford, Mazda, Peugeot, Citroen and MINI, and is generally pretty robust. Weak areas include the water and oil pumps, the exhaust gas recirculation valve and the tendency for the cylinder head to accumulate ‘sludge’ if a good quality synthetic oil isn’t used. If it’s serviced properly, and given a dose of good quality oil on a regular basis, then it should be fine.
