The trickiest thing is working out the value Revenue will put on the car - the so-called Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) - as this is what the VRT calculation will be based on, but it has nothing to do with how much you actually pay for the car.

Taking a value of €40,000 (and this is an estimate you'll have to judge for yourself), and a VRT rate of 41 per cent (based on CO2 emissions of over 191g/km), the VRT would be €16,400, for example. 

Factor in maximum NOx levy for a petrol car of €600.

And, unless the car is coming from Northern Ireland and its status allows it to be imported without import duty and VAT, you'll have to pay those as well, at 10 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.
