Hi. I am thinking about starting to drive but I would love if anyone could tell me, roughly, how much I would be spending to get a car into a road. I have no idea about how insurance and fees/taxes work in Ireland. If you could just give me an idea it would be so much appreciated!!
Hi Karina,
The car and tax should be cheap enough. A good starter car, a Nissan Micra or Toyota Auris for instance, should set you back no more than €6-7k even for a fairly recent one, and a post-2008 car should have you paying no more than about €270 a year in road tax. Anything small like that is going to easily top 45mpg in daily driving so fuel's not going to be too bad.
The stumbling block is going to be insurance. As a new driver, especially if you're under 25 or 30, you're going to be looking at as much as €2,000 for your first year's insurance. It's criminal, but sadly no-one's taking on the insurance industry right now.
