That 1.7-litre diesel is actually a pretty solid unit, although you may well find it to be a bit noisy and agricultural. You need to keep an eye on the injection system, the diesel particulate filter, the dual-mass flywheel and the fuel filter as these are all weak points, but the longevity of the engine will depend on how well it’s been cared for, and how well you look after it. A full service history is vital.
