How do the tax rates work?

What cars qualify for the cheaper motor tax rates in Ireland

Our answer:

Hi Pat,

Depends what you mean by 'cheaper' doesn't it? Basically, since 2008, all of the motor tax rates have been based around the car's CO2 emissions so the lower the emissions, the lower the tax. Cars with emissions of between 100- and 120g/km of CO2 will qualify for Band A3 or A4 tax of between €190 and €200 a year. Between 120- and 140g/km you're in Band B1 (€270) or B2 (€280).

Really low emissions cars, emitting between 80- and 100g/km cost just €180 to tax while anything between 1- and 80g/km will cost €170. Zero emissions electric cars cost €120 to tax.
