I am planning to buy a car that is registered in the Republic of Ireland. What is the procedure to register it in the UK?
Hi there,
You mean you’re buying a car in Ireland and importing it into the UK, we assume? Ok, there’s a good bit of form filling involved, but get started by going to www.gov.uk/dvlaforms and downloading Form V55/5, which you’ll have to fill out and send back along with all the requested documentation. You’ll need to get the car MOT tested before you do that, as the UK doesn’t accept an Irish NCT as being valid. You’ll also need to get onto Revenue and Customs (www.hmrc.gov.uk/nova.) to inform them that the car is in the country and to determine whether or not there’s VAT owing. Usually there isn’t but it’s a legal requirement and the DVLA will ask you for the form, so get it done. Once you have the HMRC declaration, the MOT cert, proof of purchase, proof of insurance etc, fill out the form, send it off and you should have your new number plates and tax details within about four weeks.
