How do I prove our car's value for insurance?

our opal combi ran into a flood in Jan 2016, hence trying to claim a fair share of the pre incident value, while it was 2007, the accessor took the miles off the clock this is innacurate as we had engine replaced just last fall the new engine had just 38,000 miles while they want to value the salvage saying the van had 270830 miles now I think this is not a true reflection???????????????

Our answer:

Hi Marianne,

Unfortunately, the engine is only part of the car’s value and while it may have a lower mileage, the rest of the car doesn’t and has been subjected to 270,830 miles of wear and tear. The best I can suggest is to employ your own motor assessor (there are plenty and a quick trip to Google should find one local to you) and have the car indepently assessed. You’ll have to argue it out with the insurer though, and generally speaking they’re very much a law unto themselves. Ultimately, you may have to take it to the small claims court if you can’t achieve a satisfactory outcome.
