You could use the old trick of finding a friendly mechanic and bringing them along when you go to check the car lot, but to be honest that's a bit hit-and-miss. The better solution is to get a full pre-purchase inspection, such as that provided by the AA. It can be a bit pricey, but it can also save you thousands in the long term.
