How can I get my car sorted under warranty?

Hi, I bought a used car a few months ago from a dealership with a one-year warranty. Can you tell me what rights I have as the car has been problematic since buying it, but we are being fobbed off - presumably until the warranty runs out.

Do I have any rights?

Our answer:

Hi Elizabeth,

You need to read the fine print of the warranty to make sure you know precisely what's covered and what's not. Then you'll know the precise legal ground on which you stand, but generally if it's a mechanical defect not linked to a wear and tear item (tyres, cambelt, brake pads etc.) then it should be covered. If the dealership is registered with the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) then there's a code of customer service conduct to which they must adhere. Have a peep at SIMI.ie to find out more on that.

Finally, if you're getting nowhere and you know you're right, do it the old fashioned way - go and sit in front of the service manager or sales manager and not budge until you get your way. And take to Twitter and Facebook to name and shame them while you're about it.
