There were two different variants of the 1.4-litre petrol Volkswagen Golf in 2008, which delivered either 80hp (normally aspirated) or 122hp (TSI turbo); the 140- and 170hp derivatives of this engine ceased production in 2007. You’re therefore either looking at 40mpg for the 80hp engine, or between 44- and 47mpg for the TSI – these numbers equate to anything between 7.1 and 6.0 litres/100km.
