Keep it small, keep it simple, and preferably keep it Japanese. Stick to something with a 1.0-litre engine (or as close to as possible) to keep your insurance down, and be picky about service history because there’s nothing worse than spending all your cash on repairs and service items. Think Suzuki Swift, Nissan Micra, Toyota Yaris. Volkswagen up!, Skoda Citigo, Hyundai i10, or Kia Picanto.
