Electric or Plug-in Hybrid?

Electric or Plug-in Hybrid?

I'm looking to change my car and I'm thinking about getting an electric car or plug in hybrid or even staying with diesel it's a minefield, I do about 70 km a day commuting to work about 50 km is on the motorway the other 20 km in the city my budget would be around the 40000 mark, also on the weekend I have 3 children and I ferry them around to various activities, any advice would be welcome thanks very much

Our answer:

Hi Darren,

While there’s no reason to avoid the latest, cleanest Euro-6d-compliant diesels, we estimate your annual mileage to be around the 17,000km mark and we normally recommend diesels for people doing more than 25,000km. We think a plug-in hybrid might be a good bet for you – provided you charge it regularly at both home and your place of work (otherwise, your motorway kms will hit its economy). Our recommendation would be a BMW 330e, a really good petrol-electric hybrid and a fine medium-distance commuter car, assuming you don't need to fit in three bulky child seats in the back of course.
