Does the BMW 520d engine have an issue?

Hi, I'm in the market for a 09-11 BMW 520d, I have read in the press recently that there have been issues with the timing chain failing on the BMW 2.0 diesel (N47) engine fitted to these cars, which costs a lot to repair. Is this a significant problem, should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks, John

Our answer:

Hi John,

The turbos are an issue on that generation engine too, but you can still buy one safely enough. The trick, as it is with every car really, to find one with a watertight service history that has been cared for rather than abused by its former owners. Actually, it’s probably best to buy one through BMW’s approved used programme. It’s a little more expensive but you know that the car will be in good shape and you’ll get a full two-year warranty to act as a safety net.
