You need to check the steering and suspension very carefully, especially on high-mileage cars, for signs or sounds of excessive wear or play. Press every button and switch too to make sure the electrical system is in full health. And try to find out if the previous owner(s) has kept up to date with servicing and especially with oil changes – keeping the Passat topped up with fresh, high-quality oil is critical for its long-term reliability.
