I got a timimg belt changed last week and now they say its timing chain. Can both be in the same car. 2.0 cdti 2017. I have an engine light on. Any help appreciated to save me another 500 euro odd money again. Mechanic said I need to change timing chain... Any help please ....Pat
Hi Pat,
You've not mentioned the car make and model, but sounds like you mean an Opel diesel engine. The 2017 2.0 CDTi engine has a timing belt at the front of the engine that comes with a set replacement schedule, but it also has a small timing chain in the cylinder head linking the camshafts.
I am a little surprised that requires changing to be honest and if there was no engine light on before the timing belt work was done I'd be highly suspicious of this and I'd question it with them. If you get no joy, have the car looked at by another reputable mechanic to assess what has happened.
