I have a 2018 Audi A5 TFSI and was wondering if I needed a cam belt change at some time? I also understand that I have a timing chain which should last the length of the car as long as I regularly service the car. Finally does it have a separate cam chain to the timing belt or are they effectively the same thing? many thanks Colin
Hi Colin,
In general terms, yes, a timing belt and a timing chain do the same thing and most engines have one or the other. There are some that use secondary belts or chains in the engine, but that does not apply to your car.
You've not told us the engine size. The 1.4 TFSI A5 of that year has a timing belt that should be changed at least every 240,000km, regardless of time. The 2.0 TFSI engine, meanwhile, uses a timing chain, which, as you said, should be designed for the life of the engine.
