It’s a perennial problem, this, and to be honest much of it depends on what seats you’re using and how old your kids are. The best bets are always MPVs — the Renault Scenic, Citroen C4 Picasso, Volkswagen Touran, Toyota Verso, Kia Carens, Peugeot 5008 andOpel Zafira — they’ll all take three seats in the back without difficulty. If you want to stick to a conventional car or estate, it gets trickier. The bigger the car, the better, of course, and Volvo’s old S80 and V70 were good examples of cars with enough width for three child seats. Beyond that, you might be best off looking at a rear-seat conversion, such as those offered by EP Mooney, which slot in a plug-in system for car seats that can take as many as four side-by-side. They come with other limitations, however.
