Does the chain have to be changed?
Hi Maria,
In the vast majority of cars that use timing chains, there is no set replacement schedule. They are theoretically designed for the life of the engine. However, it's not unusual for timing chains or their associated components - such as tensioners - to wear out and get noisy. They can even slip or snap, though there's usually some warning signs well before that happens. A good mechanic should be able to advise you if your timing chain is noisy, but if it isn't, and the car is well-maintained, then there's no reason to think about changing the chain.
