Actually, the 1.4 TSI petrol engine uses a timing belt. 

It's not a flawless car, with lots of niggles and a few potentially expensive known issues, including the failure of the water pump seal, which can lead to overheating. 

If you're looking at one, get it checked over thoroughly and look for evidence that the water pump has been changed along with the timing belt. If it has not, then we'd suggest getting it done.
