Do you pay VAT on imported cars now?

Hi Is it true that car imported from the UK will have to pay VAT at 21% in addition to VRT already payable. If so are the rules different for a car imported from Northern Ireland. Thanks Aidan

Our answer:

Hi Aidan,

Yes, the rules have changed significantly since Brexit on 1 Jan this year. Cars imported from England, Scotland or Wales do indeed attract VAT and VRT now, even if they're not new or nearly-new. The importer also gets slapped with import duty for the majority of cars.

The rules for Northern Ireland are different and the costs are effectively no different to before when importing from the North, though the paperwork has changed.
