Do tax arrears need to be paid to scrap a car?

Do tax arrears need to be paid to scrap a car?

Thanks Shane for your reply. Can I further enquire. My niece has been using her mother's 2006 car since her mother has been unable to drive due to illness. The niece has not taxed or NCTed the car in 3 years. As it is probably not roadworthy my sister wants to sell/scrap it to get rid of it. Does she to clear the arrears to get rid of the car by whatever legal means. Thank you.

Our answer:

Hi Siobhan,

No, there is no need to clear the arrears, though obviously the car should not be driven on the public road. When the car is scrapped, asked the Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) for a certificate of destruction for your records, but they inform the Department of Transport that the car is to be removed from the system.
