Do I pay VAT twice on an import from the North?

Do I pay VAT twice on an import from the North?

Hi, I want to import a Vauxhall Combo life electric from NI. It's a 2022 model, it has not been registered in NI yet but is being sold by a Vauxhall main dealer. The dealer will be charging VAT so do I have to pay Irish VAT aswell?

Our answer:

Hi Willie,

I'm afraid that could be the case, yes. However, the NI dealer can actually reclaim the VAT they paid on purchasing the vehicle in the first place. There's no onus on them to pass that saving onto you, but your knowledge of it could net you a discount if they're keen to sell to you.
