Do I pay VAT on importing a 2022 car?

Hi , my question is about VAT. I'm thinking of buying a car from a Dealer in NI. It was bought new in NI and registered in NI in Jan 2022. It was in private ownership until recently traded in to dealer. It was never registered or owned in UK. Will I have to pay VAT to import to ROI?

Our answer:

Hi John,

Our understanding is that you will not be liable for VAT on importing this car. As ever, you should seek the official information from Revenue, but we believe that, as the car was registered before 1 Jan 2023 in Northern Ireland, no VAT will be payable. Make sure you can prove that it was indeed registered in the North.
