Do I pay tax arrears on a car I bought?

Hi, I recently purchased a car (through a dealership). I received a loan from a finance company to do this. When I went online to pay the Motor tax, I saw that the tax was in arrears to the tune of approximately €440. I presume I don't have to pay this as this pre dates my ownership of the car?

Our answer:

Hi Chris,

You're correct, you are not responsible for tax arrears. You are only responsible for tax from the date you bought the car. The system must not yet have registered the change of ownership. If it continues with that then look up the number for your local motor tax office online and call them to see if they can help.
