hi, I want to sell my car without motor tax, which expired last July. I had to leave the state ( June 2021 )and left the car on a private property, it wasn't used on the public roads since, except starting the engine once a couple of days by my friend to keep it work. Now I'm back in Dublin and want to sell it. Do I need to pay the arrears or will it be cancelled and the new owner will start paying it ( not the arrears) after buying the car? Thank you Adam
Hi Adam,
It's bad news, I'm afraid. Unless you declared the car off the road ahead of time, you are liable for the motor tax, regardless of where the car was or how it was/was not used. You are still liable for the tax even after you sell the car on.
