Hi Ken,
Up to 2015, the 1.2 engine actually used a timing chain, so, assuming you mean a newer model than that, the recommended interval has nothing to do with time at all. The belt should be checked at 240,000km and then every 30,000km after that, the mechanic advising if it should be changed.
