Do I need to back-tax my car?

Do I need to back-tax my car?

Hi Shane, My car has been in the garage since early February and I have only got it back now in mid April. I am planning on selling it. Do I need to back tax the car as the new owner will only need to pay from start of month of purchase? The tax ran out at the end of January.... Thanks

Our answer:

Hi David,

Yes, you will have to back-tax the car. If you had known ahead of time it was going to be off the road ahead of time then you could have declared it as such and not paid the tax, but you can't do that retrospectively. If you sell the car without paying the back tax you are still liable for it, not the new owner.
