Do I have to pay insurance if a car was off the road?

If a car has been off the road for 6 months. Do you have to pay the insurance for those 6 months, or can you get it signed off by the gardai.

Our answer:

Hi Tina,

As far as insurance is concerned, there’s nothing to pay and no issue involved. You simply start up a new policy. It’s unlikely that an insurer will even ask if a car has been off the road for any length of time. It’s only an issue for tax – any car being taken off the road has to be declared, in advance, before its last period of tax ran out otherwise the usual horde of fines and penalties will apply.
