Well, it depends on which vehicles you’re looking at, but from those engines I’m going to take a stab at two Ford Focuses and a Volkswagen Golf? The 1.6 TDCi is the more sophisticated engine of the three, and is exceptionally frugal in real-world driving, added to which the Focus has always been good to drive and well-made. The older 1.8 TDCi isn’t as good a unit, so let’s discount that. The 1.9 TDI, if it’s in a Golf, is mighty tempting though. It too is an older engine design, but very solid and reliable (bar some issues with air mass sensors and occasional injector problems) on top of which the Golf is classy, comfy and holds on to resale value. All things being equal, I’d go for the Golf, but you should look at each car carefully and choose on the basis of history and condition.
