Did Vauxhall cause my car's problem?

I had my vauxhall insignia 1.8i serviced by vauxhall on Monday the oil sump was leaking so they removed it and sealed it back up the next day the car engine stopped while driving rac came out and noticed the crankshaft pully had came off he thinks the mechanic removed the crankshaft pully to access the oil sump would this be the case as vauxhall are denying this,my car now has to be scrapped, thanks

Our answer:

Hi Brian,

It would be very unusual to remove a crankshaft pulley to take a sump off, though I guess not impossible. Without a view of the work, we don't know any more than the RAC guy. If you believe you have a case to take, you'll need to pay an independent assessor to take a look at the car.

It's highly unusual for a crankshaft pulley to just come off on its own.
