Hi. I am considering importing a 2014 VW Polo 1.2L, model S 60PS 3dr (65,000miles) from the UK and am trying to calculate the cost of the VRT + VAT + Import Duty to determine the overall cost, Any insights you can provide on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Hi there,
It's a bit of a nightmare to calculate the costs accurately now with the new charges due to Brexit.
Import duty is probably the easiest one; it's 10 per cent of the total cost of the car landed in Ireland, including transportation.
VAT is charged at the Irish rate, which is currently at 21 per cent. That is likely to go back up to 23 per cent in the near future.
VRT is the tricky one as it depends on the CO2 rating for the car and the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) that Revenue will deem the car to be worth. Note that is NOT necessarily the same as you paid for it, but what Revenue thinks the car would sell for in Ireland. I'd estimate (and this is only an estimate) that the Polo you've described would sell for €11,000.
As far as I can work out, that car's NEDC CO2 rating is 128g/km. Revenue will uplift that to an equivalent WLTP rating, which works out as 153g/km, meaning a VRT rate of 23.5 per cent. If the OMSP is deemed to be €11,000, then the VRT payable would be €2,585.
On top of all that, there's the NOx levy to pay. Our data shows that this car has a NOx rating of 42mg/km, which means a NOx levy of €210.
