Considering importing a 2003 Defender...

I’m considering buying a 2003 Landrover 110 TD defender for£7900 In the UK and bringing it to Ireland. What charges will I have to pay? Thank you

Our answer:

Hi Sally-Anne,

You will have to pay 23 per cent VAT for a start - calculated on the price you paid for the vehicle plus shipping to Ireland.

It's possible that import duty (usually 10 per cent of the vehicle's value) will not be payable if the Defender was manufactured in the UK.

On top of all that you'll have VRT - Vehicle Registration Tax. If the Defender is categorised as a passenger vehicle then VRT is calculated according to the VRT band (determined by the CO2 emissions) and what's called the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP).

The latter is not what you paid for the vehicle, but the price Revenue expects it to be worth in Ireland. It's not always easy to predict, but for the purposes of our calculations let's assume €15,000.

That Defender comfortably sits in the top VRT band for over 191g/km CO2, so the rate is 41 per cent.

An estimate of the VRT is therefore 41 per cent of €15,000, or €6,150. This is of course only an estimate and Revenue may deem the vehicle to be worth more (or less) so adjust your expectations accordingly.
