Petrol Mk5 Golfs have far fewer potential problems than diesels, so you need to watch for air conditioning issues (which might suggest the car needs a new condenser), you need to check it rides nicely during a test drive (if not, the front springs might need replacing, which won’t be cheap) and have a look at the rear light clusters, as these used to mist up with condensation if their seals fail.
