Hi Paul,
The Edge should be going on sale by the summer of this year, and it will come primarily with a 2.0-litre 180hp diesel engine, similar to the one seen in the Ford Focus ST TDCi that we’ve just reviewed. If you go for the six-speed manual option, the emissions on that Edge will be 149g/km so motor tax will be €390 a year.
As for price, Ford hasn’t given us an Irish price yet but given that the Kuga hovers around the €35k mark and most of the other large SUVs (Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sportage) hover close to the €40k mark you can probably make an educated guess. Mind you, Ford is aiming the Edge at cars like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, and is promising seriously high levels of tech and equipment to help it compete so possibly it’ll be deeper into the €40s.
Standard equipment is to be confirmed too, but should include a 10-inch touchscreen for the SYNC 2 infotainment system, LED lights, active cruise control, emergency self-braking, adaptive steering (which needs fewer turns at low speed) and Active Noise Cancellation, which uses a white noise generator in the stereo to counteract engine and tyre noise coming in from outside.
There won’t be a seven-seat option though, which puts it at something of a disadvantage relative to the likes of the Santa Fe and Sorento, but Ford is promising class-leading interior space all the same.
