Can you help me sell my car?

HI, I am selling my car and was wondering if you can give me any pointers firstly to ensure I get the best price and more importantly to ensure that the person buying it is genuine. Also how should I ask for payment and should I sign over ownership before lodging payment. Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Leonard,

Well, to get the best price make sure you present the car as well as possible. Take lots of good photos, in good light, with space around the car, for the advert. Then, when people come to see it, make sure it’s utterly clean inside and out. Make sure all of the car’s history is up to date and that the service book is fully stamped and shows a full and unbroken service history. Make sure you have all the other paperwork to hand  – any previous NCTs, even old tax discs.

As for making sure that the buyer is genuine, that’s a trickier one and it kind of relies on you using your own radar to check them out as you’re talking to them. But no, never sign over anything or hand over any keys until a proper payment has been made. If you’re really worried you can arrange to meet the buyer at their bank or building society, and have the manager confirm their identity. Generally though, all you need to do is to wait for a cheque or bank draft to fully clear into your account and then you can hand the car over. Don’t accept things like PayPal payments and preferably don’t arrange for direct electronic fund transfers as this involves you handing out your own bank details.
