Hi, I'm currently looking to change my car. I currently drive approximately 30k km a year but I think this may increase to closer to 40k in the current year due to a move in where I live. I currently drive a golf which I have had for nearly 10 years but I'm looking to change to a saloon as I think I should have some added comfort due to my mileage and the need for a bigger car in future years as I'm not one for changing my car often (3 cars in 19 years). Due to my high mileage I think from my research that I would be more suited to a low mileage 2nd hand car from an economical viewpoint, would that be correct? I am leaning towards the Optima, i40 or Insignia at the moment as from looking at the specs that come with them and their cost for newer vehicle suit the budget I have currently set as A4s, S40s and Passats are more expensive and I would have to either buy an older model with more miles to fit it. I would much appreciate any advice you can give me. Even telling me that I should change my car more often with the mileage I do I will listen to, as at the moment I would intend to hold onto any car I buy for 5 years or more. I wouldn't have the patience for changing cars that often unless it was necessary. Thanks
Hi Michael,
It’s certainly not necessary for you to change your car more often – it’s all up to you, of course but it is worth bearing in mind that higher mileages on older cars does reduce their retained value a little. That said, the three cars you’re looking at should all be good choices. Overall, I’d go for the i40 as a first choice. Of the three, it’s the most economical overall, enormously comfortable and very spacious, especially if you go for the estate.
