Can we avoid costs giving a family member the car?

Hi, my daughter lives and works in Belfast, is there any scenario where she can sell her northern Ireland registered car to her brother here in the south that is exempt from some or all duties and levies? Thank you

Our answer:

Hi Joseph,

I'm not aware of a scenario in which that would work. The closest would be for your daughter to relocate to the south with the car. If she did that, then she shouldn't have to pay any taxes to re-register the car, after which she could sell it on.
