Strictly speaking, no. Once you have brought a car into Ireland you have seven days to notify the Revenue Commissioners and book an appointment at your local NCT centre to have the car inspected. You have 30 days in total to complete that inspection and pay the Vehicle Registration Tax and get the new Irish numberplates for it. Then you can trade it in, nice and legally. 

That is, of course, unless you are moving here from the UK and have owned and taxed the car for at least six months prior to moving. Then, although you’ll still have to go through all the paperwork, you can bring it in free of charge.
