Can I improve my Golf's economy?

I have a VW Golf 1.2 TSI 7 speed DSG. I am currently not very happy with the cars fuel economy. While being gentle on the throttle it consumes 8L/100km combined. Its 9 years and odo reads 145000. I need to understand which part is due for replacement at this stage that can improve fuel economy? One complaint i have while driving ramps or steep hill the engine has to work too hard and i can feel something like a clutch slip. The car is currently under a service plan with VW, but please advice any garage who could replace parts cost effectively. Frank keane is charging 300 to replace front brake pads

Our answer:

Hi Maran,

That really isn't an easy one to answer and changing parts may do nothing to help the economy. For the record, we don't think that's too bad for a Golf of that age with that engine and gearbox.

You could have the gearbox checked by Volkswagen if you think there's something wrong with it, and that would certainly affect fuel economy. Other than that we'd suggest keeping it serviced regularly and check you have the correct tyre pressures, as that has a huge effect on fuel consumption.

Roof bars, roof boxes and bike holders can also negatively effect the economy, as can carrying around extra weight in the boot or lots of passengers.
