It depends on how serious the old problem was, how long ago it was and how good your credit has been in the interim. It may be worth signing up to a service such as Experian that may be able to help you get things in better order, but aside from that, if you apply for finance from one of the car company’s own banks (Renault, BMW, Volkswagen, etc) you’re a little more likely to be accepted as they are, obviously, specifically setup for loaning people money to buy cars.
